ARTS was orgainized in 1993 to speed the implementation of technology in retail at lower costs through standards. As technology has evolved to play a vital role in successful retailing, ARTS has expanded its product offerings to keep pace. ARTS now offers everything from application integration aids to white papers that educate and guide retailers in the use of the latest technologies such as SOA, cloud computing, and mobile. Over the last 18 years, hundreds of volunteer experts, representing both retailers and technology vendors, have developed operational and warehouse data models; 18 standard XML (extensible markup language) schemas to support application integration; 7 standard requests for proposal (RFPs); best practices for XML, SOA, and PCI DSS (payment card industry data security standards); standard connections for 36 POS devices; and various white papers and educational programs.

All of these products are interrelated through standard data and structures. They work together to provide a solid foundation for cloud computing and SOA, which are technologies of choice to make available rapid, flexible support of business processes across the multiple retail channels at lower cost.
